The Worship Arts Ministry at Greenwood’s First Baptist Church

*Editor’s note: I visited with Tom McCone on day in the fall of 2013 as he was crossing the street near the church. I told him that we would love to tell our readers any news of upcoming events in music at FBC. He recently shared with me the details in this story. It was just what we were looking for to put in the “Church News” segment. If your congregation, Bible Study group, praise team or ministry has news for this space, let us know.

Some remote northern and western states with few mission and discipleship programs are getting assistance from larger state conventions in the Southern Baptist Convention. Greenwood, as expected has risen to the call for discipleship. FBC’s Tom McCone attended an informational meeting on the subject and was struck by the distances between pastors, many of whom have fulltime secular careers as well as their ministries. Distances and weather conditions often separate these churches even further from the rest of the world. These same conditions and tightening budgets allow for little in the way of discipleship ministries to access these congregations and their heavily burdened leaders. Wyoming Southern Baptist Convention Evangelism Conferences are a welcome respite to these church leaders.

In January 2013, an ensemble from the Praise Team at Greenwood First Baptist Church traveled to Casper, Wyoming as part of a program whereby Arkansas Southern Baptist Convention congregations provide speakers and musicians for conferences and training seminars to Wyoming Southern Baptist Convention programs. The Greenwood Praise tem participants were joined by Dr. Emil Turner, past Executive Director of the Arkansas Baptist State Convention, and Dr. Sonny Tucker, past Director of Evangelism the ABSC and now Executive Director, and provided all the music and much of the messages and programming for the annual Wyoming Southern Baptist Convention Evangelism Conference. “It was truly remarkable to see and experience the joy those Wyoming people expressed when they got together with long-time friends who rarely get to see each other, as they shared their victories and struggles and as they offered sincere support for one another in serving the Lord Jesus in their communities and churches” said McCone of the 2013 experience.

The Greenwood FBC Praise Team has been invited back for the 2014 Wyoming SBC Evangelism conference.  Seven musicians from First Baptist Church will be traveling together to provide music for that conference January 26th through the 29th. They have also “borrowed” Bro. Zack Thomas, worship pastor at Lonoke Baptist Church as their drummer.

We will look forward to a report on the 2014 Wyoming Southern Baptist Convention experience and Greenwood FBC’s participation in the event.
