Soccer teams open season in River City tournament

By Richard White

Despite the recent patch of wintry weather in the area, spring sports are underway at Greenwood High School, including girls and boys soccer. Both teams participated in the Fort Smith Invitational this past weekend, with each team getting to play three matches. Greenwood will be hosting its own tournament this coming weekend at Smith-Robinson Stadium.

The Fort Smith tournament was divided between Northside and Southside, utilizing both on-campus stadiums. The GHS girls opened play against Fayetteville and lost 3-0. Dropping into the losers’ bracket, the Lady Bulldogs then played Northside and tied 1-1 in regulation, but lost the match on penalty kicks. Senior Rachel Meyers scored on a headshot against Northside for the lone GHS goal. Their final game was a 2-0 victory over Maumelle, with junior Emily Jones scoring both goals for Greenwood.

According to GHS Head Coach Andrew Post, “The girls gained a lot of experience from the tournament. [We] saw great play from Mimmi Pellney, the starting goalkeeper, Rachel Meyers (midfielder), and Emily Jones (midfielder/forward). The defense was anchored by junior Ashton Warren (center back), who also had a great weekend.”

The GHS boys, who reached the state finals last spring, opened the tournament against Van Buren and won 2-1. Both goals were scored by senior forward Kevin Jones. But the boys lost game two against Northside, 2-0, and then fell to Fayetteville, 3-0. “The boys played a better tournament than the scores indicate,” said Coach Post.

“The defense was anchored by sophomore Jarrod Cooper (center back) and junior Brady McAlister (right back). The midfield saw great play from juniors Santi Deus (center midfield) and Deon Alvarez (center midfield),” added Post. “I am very pleased with the progress of both teams. We look to have great success this season with several key starters returning on both teams this season.”
