Old Jail Museum Open for the Season with New Exhibit

Greenwood’s only tourist attraction-the Old Jail Museum Complex is open for the 2014 season with a new exhibit: “Black Diamonds-Coal in South Sebastian County.”  The exhibit features all new materials including an exhibit on the coal mining “company stores” in Bonanza and Jenny Lind and an explanation of why miners and their families “owed their souls to the company store.”

“The Company Store Through the Eyes of a Child” features toys, penny candy, games and brief interviews with Mary Ann Gamble and Jack Wallace, who share fond memories of the “company store” in Jenny Lind.

The exhibit includes an old coal stove and a checker board ready for locals to enjoy-just like the old days.

Greenwood’s Sue Lewis is the Curator and creator of the exhibit. Her work and creativity are on display and once again establish her as a stalwart figure in preservation efforts and exemplifying the Society’s motto: “Preserving the Past for the Future.”

Hours for the Museum are: Friday and Saturdays 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.
