Greenwood participates in 6A state track meet

Greenwood High School track and field athletes competed in the 6A state meet in Russellville on May 8th, with the GHS girls placing sixth and the boys 15th out of 16 teams.

In the 400-meter dash, Greenwood’s Austin Curry scored points by running fourth (52.57), while Aaron Testerman placed ninth with a time of 57.04 seconds. Greenwood’s Matt MaHan finished 10th in the 3200-meter event with a time of 11:39.60. In the 300-meter high hurdles, Gunner Walter finished eighth with a time of 44.68 seconds.

The GHS 4×100 boys meter relay team ran ninth with a time of 45.89 seconds. The 4×800 meter relay team also ran ninth with a time of 9:12.13. The GHS boys scored five points in the meet.

On the girls’ side, the Lady Bulldogs scored 42 points. Together with the boys’ total, Greenwood placed 11th overall in the meet with 47 points. One of the top performances for the Lady Bulldogs came from Greenwood’s Laurel Yeager, who finished second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:26.10.

In the 1600 meter run, Kayla Reed placed eighth with a time of 5:56.52. Mckenzie Wheeler was also ninth (6:00.42). Reed and Elka Platt also finished eighth (13:07.04) and 10th (13:31.38), respectively, in the 3200-meter run. Callie Harmon had the best performance for Greenwood by running first in the 300-meter high hurdles with a time of 48.18 seconds.

The GHS girls 4×100 meter relay team placed eighth with a time of 53.07 seconds, while the GHS girls 4×400 meter relay team also finished tenth (4:35.21). In the girls high jump, Greenwood’s Veronica Shumaker finished 10th, clearing the bar at 4’4”.

GHS freshman Bailee McCorkle earned first place points in the pole vault, soaring 11’9”. Laurel Yeager finished in fourth place in the long jump with a distance of 16’9”. She also placed third (35’1.50”) in the triple jump for Greenwood.

Meet of Champs

Based on their performances at the 6A state meet, a few Lady Bulldogs qualified for the Arkansas Meet of Champs, also held at Russellville High School last Saturday, May 17th. Greenwood freshman Bailee McCorkle qualified in the girls’ pole vault and Laurel Yeager qualified in both the girls’ triple jump and the 800-meter run. Callie Harmon competed in the 300-meter hurdles.

Yeager ran seventh in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:27.46. Harmon scored fourth place points in the 300-meter high hurdles with a time of 48.28 seconds. In the girls’ pole vault, McCorkle tied with three other girls for third place, all clearing the bar at 11 feet even. And in the triple jump, Laurel Yeager finished in sixth place with a distance of 34’8-¼”.
