Greenwood Native New Bentonville Head Football Coach: ATU graduate Jody Grant hired to replace retiring Lunney

Arkansas’ largest high school-7A Bentonville-has announced the selection of Coach Jody Grant to replace the retiring Head Football Coach Barry Lunney, Sr.

Grant, 39, was already in the mammoth school district having served as a Junior High Football Coach. He had worked his way to Bentonville following stints at Clinton and Vilonia and had been recruited by Lunney to the senior high program.

Lunney, who has always had strong ties to Greenwood, was once an assistant coach here. He and his wife Becky lived in Greenwood when their son-Razorback standout-Barry Lunney, Jr. was born.

Lunney suggest to Grant that he be one of the 33 applicants for the top Coaching position. Jody Grant is a 1994 graduate of Greenwood High School and played football for the Greenwood Bulldogs. He is the son of Susie and Col. Phil Bunch of Greenwood. Grant and his wife Rachel have three sons, ages 12, 11 and 1.

Grant attended Arkansas Tech University and received his Master’s Degree at Arkansas State University at Jonesboro.

Grant’s grandfather-Coach Joe Grant-was a legendary high school football coach in Alabama. Grant assumes the role as head coach at the state’s largest high school well prepared for the job and with football in his blood.
