Greenwood Attacked, Sheriff Arrested: An Incident of Reconstruction

There were many strange events in Greenwood during the period of “Reconstruction” following the Civil War. One resulted in the arrest of the local sheriff. Sebastian County Circuit Judge Jim Spears will entertain the membership of the South Sebastian County Historical Society with this humorous tale at the June 16, 7 PM meeting at Farmer’s Bank Community Room in Greenwood. The community is invited to attend.

Judge Spears is the Division 3 Judge of the Twelfth Circuit serving Sebastian County. He was first elected to the position in 1992. Spears received an Associate’s Degree from then Westark Junior College (now University of Arkansas at Fort Smith) in 1966 before earning an undergraduate degree at Arkansas Tech University in 1968, then his Juris Doctor at the University of Arkansas School of Law in 1973. He has received numerous awards and recognition for his service to the community and the legal profession. Spears currently serves as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the U.S. Marshal’s Museum in Fort Smith. He is a frequent speaker on topics involving Sebastian County history.
