GHS Wins at State Beta Convention

Story submitted

Seventy members of the GHS Beta Club recently attended the State Beta Convention in Hot Springs and came home with the top ranking in Group Talent and a third place finish statewide in Oratory.    Over eighty different Arkansas schools participated in the academic, oratory and fine arts competitions.

Greenwood won 1st place in the group talent contest for the sixth year in a row with their “Wheels of Progress” presentation.   Vocalist Landon Phillips, accompanied by Hayley Hales on the drums, Baylee Moore on lead guitar and Hayden Kelly on bass guitar presented “Wheel in the Sky”, a 1980’s hit by Journey.  This was followed by a transition of “The Wheels on the Bus Go Round and Round”  with Lauren Walker, Hope Frost, Cherise Robison, Mackenzie Mullikan, Collin Moore and  Kristi Gray driving a school bus across the stage.  The third part of the number “Wheels” was presented by vocalist, Jacob George, and accompanied by Anna McAfee on the keyboard, Will Tedford on drums and Hayden Kelly on the bass guitar.  A “precision scooter” routine with Conner Ciesla, Darynne Dahlem, Sara Earnhart, Abbie Moore,  Jake Odell, Austin Pearcy, Kyle Pierce, and Katie Tran  joined in with the ‘”wheels” concept.  Justin Barker, Leyton Cabe, and Collin Moore served as narrator and actors to tie all the songs together.  The talent ended with a dance routine of Proud Mary (“big wheel keep on turning”) with Jessica Kolljeski as soloist and a dance routine choreographed by Katie Bruton and Abbey Robbins.  Also included in the dance were Brandon Heiss, Will Johnson, Baylee Moore, Hunter Norris, Hayley Palmer, Emma Shortes, Hannah Spandle, Macy Webb and Story Whitson. Special thanks goes to Mr. Justin Newhart and his Construction Tech classes for making the gears for the “Wheels of Progress” backdrop.

GHS also campaigned for State Beta President with junior, Christian Griffith as their candidate. Griffith is the son of Michelle and Gordon Griffith.  To encourage voters to support his candidacy he used the campaign drawn from the social media site,  “the Vine”.  His campaign skit was designed by Lindsey Allen, Haylee Oliver, Jordan Robison and Cherise Robison.  Beta members participating in the academic competitions were Micah Escalante, Lexi France, Austin Gosch, Eric Huynh, Ben Keisling, and  B. J Shaffer.  Avery Melton placed third in oratory and will represent Greenwood at the National Beta Convention this summer in Richmond , Virginia.
