GHS track team hosts Bulldog Relays

The Greenwood High School track and field teams have been busy over the past couple of weeks, hosting the Bulldog Relays at Smith-Robinson Stadium, and also competing at Alma and Van Buren. Greenwood will take part in the annual McDonald Relays at Fort Smith Southside this coming Thursday, before hosting the 7A/6A Central conference meet on Thursday, May 1st. The GHS boys and girls squads are coached by Brian Sims, assisted by Jim Andrews and Greg Nichols.

 

Bulldog Relays

Ten area teams took part in the annual Bulldog Relays on April 7th. Fort Smith Southside finished first overall with a team total of 168.83 points. Alma placed second (137.83), Fort Smith Northside was third (137.00), and Greenwood came in fourth with 118.33 points. Overall standings are determined by combining the scores of both the boys and girls for each team. Mansfield rounded out the top five with 102.33 points. No other team scored above 80 points in the meet.

In the 100-meter dash, Greenwood’s Jordan Green finished third with a time of 11.77 seconds. He also placed third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.13 seconds. In the 400-meter dash, Greenwood’s Austin Curry ran third with a time of 53.54 seconds.

In the distance events, Greenwood’s Jerod Powell placed third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:19.03. He also ran fifth (5:25.73) in the 1600-meter run. Matt MaHan and Reid Carter finished third and fifth, respectively, with times of 11:40.00 and 12:08.87 in the 3200-meter event.

Gunner Walter of Greenwood earned sixth place points with a time of 47.00 flat in the 300-meter high hurdles. The GHS boys 4×800 meter relay team ran second with a time of 9:33.22. Gunner Walter also earned points by placing sixth in the boys triple jump with a distance of 35’1.5”

Brian Pullen was sixth for Greenwood in the shot put with a distance of 38’2”, while Colten Sims was third in the discus throw with a heave of 113’ even. The GHS boys scored a total of 40 points.

On the girls’ side, Callie Harmon earned fourth place points in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.48 seconds. Greenwood also got fifth place points from Kassy Ballard with a time of 14.08 seconds. Ballard also placed second in the 200-meter event (28.90), while Alexis Looper placed sixth (30.92). In the 400-meter dash Greenwood’s Lene Hermann and Breanna Vanscoy placed sixth and seventh with times of 1:11.78 and 1:12.48, respectively.

In the distance events, Greenwood’s Laurel Yeager was first in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:33.49. Elka Platt was second in the 1600-meter event with a time of 6:20.88. Platt also finished first in the 3200-meter run with a winning time of 13:32.47, nearly 10 seconds ahead of the second place runner from Fort Smith Southside.

Callie Harmon ran fourth in the 100-meter high hurdles with a time of 18.17 seconds, but she finished first in the 300-meter high hurdles with a time of 50.18 seconds. The GHS girls 4×100 meter relay team placed fourth with a time of 54.66 seconds, while the GHS girls 4×400 meter relay team finished third (4:53.81).

GHS freshman Bailee McCorkle earned first place points in the pole vault, soaring 12’1”, the best performance in the nation this year by a ninth grader. Laurel Yeager finished in first place in the long jump with a distance of 16’6”, nearly a foot farther than the second place finisher. She also placed third (32’11”) in the triple jump for Greenwood. The Lady Bulldogs tallied 78.33 points in the meet.

 

Airedale Relays

On April 11th the GHS track and field athletes competed at Alma, part of 16 teams who took part in the event. The GHS boys scored 15 total points and placed ninth, while the girls scored 54 points and finished fourth. Their combined scores earned Greenwood an overall finish of eighth place.

The best performance among the GHS boys came in the 400-meter dash. Greenwood’s Austin Curry ran first with a time of 53.49 seconds. Jerod Powell placed sixth (5:13.23) in the 1600-meter run. Colten Sims was fifth in the discus throw with a heave of 117’10”.

On the girls’ side, Laura Yeager ran third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:04.31. In the distance events, Kayla Reed was fourth in the 1600-meter run (6:03.27), while Elka Platt was sixth with a time of 6:12.62. The same two girls were fourth (13:12.58) and fifth (13:21.32), respectively, in the 3200-meter run.

Callie Harmon ran third in the 100-meter high hurdles with a time of 16.76 seconds, and she also finished third in the 300-meter high hurdles with a time of 48.90 seconds. The GHS girls 4×100 meter relay team placed fourth with a time of 53.52 seconds, while the GHS girls 4×400 meter relay team finished fifth (4:39.30).

Greenwood’s Bailee McCorkle once again earned first place points in the pole vault, soaring 11’6”. Laurel Yeager finished in seventh place in the long jump with a distance of 15’2.50”. She also tied for third place (31’10”) in the triple jump for Greenwood.

 

Pointer Relays

On April 17th the GHS boys and girls track teams competed at Van Buren, part of 18 area teams who took part in the event. The GHS boys scored 7 total points and placed 13th, while the girls scored 45 points and finished sixth. Their combined total of 52 earned Greenwood a ninth place finish overall.

The Bulldogs placed in only two events. Greenwood’s Austin Curry ran sixth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 53.22 seconds, and the Greenwood boys ran fifth in the 4×100 meter relay with a time of 45.67 seconds.

On the girls’ side, Laura Yeager ran third in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:30.79. Callie Harmon was fourth in the 100-meter high hurdles with a time of 16.85 seconds, and she also finished eighth in the 300-meter high hurdles with a time of 51.32 seconds. The GHS girls 4×100 meter relay team placed fifth with a time of 53.37 seconds.

Greenwood’s Bailee McCorkle earned first place points again in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 11 feet even. Laurel Yeager finished in first place in the long jump with a distance of 16 feet even. She also finished second (33’4”) in the triple jump for Greenwood.
