GHS Track Team Competes in Tiger Relays

The Greenwood High School track and field teams competed last Tuesday at the Tiger Relays held at Mansfield High School. A total of 17 teams took part in the annual event, with Greenwood finishing sixth overall with 130 combined points. Alma won the meet with 243 total points. The GHS boys and girls squads are coached by Brian Sims, assisted by Jim Andrews and Greg Nichols.

Caden Martin of Greenwood came in fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.24 seconds. Gunner Walter was seventh at 24.40 seconds. In the 400-meter dash, Greenwood’s Austin Curry ran second with a time of 54.10 seconds.

In the distance events, Greenwood’s Jerod Powell placed first in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:16.25. He also ran third (5:18.37) in the 1600-meter run.

Brian Pullen was sixth for Greenwood in the shot put with a distance of 38’10.25”. Colten Sims was third in the discus throw with a heave of 116’2”. The GHS boys scored a total of 39 points.

On the girls’ side, Greenwood got fifth place points in the 100-meter dash from Kassy Ballard with a time of 14.12 seconds. She also placed fifth in the 200-meter event (29.82).

In the distance events, Greenwood’s Laurel Yeager was first in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:45.26. Kayla Reed finished fourth in the 1600-meter run (6:17.54) while Elka Platt was fifth (6:20.88). The same two girls finished second (13:34.82) and third (13:47.97), respectively, in the 3200-meter run.

Callie Harmon ran third in the 100-meter high hurdles with a time of 17.96 seconds. Harmon also placed second in the 300-meter high hurdles with a time of 49.22 seconds. The GHS girls 4×100-meter relay team placed second with a time of 54.59 seconds, while the 4×400-meter relay team finished fourth (4:45.27).

Bailee McCorkle earned first place points in the pole vault, soaring 11’8”. Laurel Yeager finished in first place in the long jump with a distance of 15’10”. She also placed seventh (31’1.5”) in the triple jump for Greenwood. The Lady Bulldogs tallied 91 points in the meet.

The annual Bulldog Relays were held this past Monday at Smith-Robinson Stadium, but results of that meet were not available at press time. Greenwood will compete in the Airedale Relays at Alma on Friday. They will also take part in the Pointer Relays in Van Buren and the McDonald Relays at Fort Smith Southside later this month before hosting the conference meet on Thursday, May 1st.
