GHS track team competes at Alma

With the arrival of warmer weather, the Greenwood High School track and field teams sprang into action last week at the James Lemley Quad City meet at Alma High School. The GHS boys and girls squads are coached by Brian Sims, assisted by Jim Andrews and Greg Nichols.

Four other teams competed in the early season meet, including Fort Smith Southside and Northside, along with Van Buren, Alma, and Greenwood. Southside won the overall competition, combining girls and boys points for a first place total of 236, dwarfing second place Alma with 156 points. Greenwood finished fifth with a total of 81 points.

Jordan Green placed fourth in the boys 100-meter dash with a time of 11.59 seconds. Caden Martin of Greenwood came in sixth at 11.93 seconds. Colton Hughes (12.19) was ninth for the Bulldogs. In the 200-meter dash, Green was first with a time of 23.96 seconds. Martin was third at 24.20 seconds. In the 400-meter dash, Greenwood’s Austin Curry ran fourth with a time of 57.19 seconds.

In the distance events, Greenwood’s Jerod Powell placed fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:19.59. He also ran fifth (5:12.88) in the 1600-meter run.

In the 300-meter high hurdles, Gunner Walter scored sixth place points for the Bulldogs with a time of 47.50 seconds. The GHS boys also ran fourth in the 4×100-meter relays with a time of 46.43 seconds, and third in the 4×400-meter relays (4:00.88).

In the long jump, Colton Hughes tied for fourth with a leap of 17’11”. In the triple jump, Gunner Walter covered a distance of 34’5”, good enough for fourth place. Brian Pullen was sixth for Greenwood in the shot put with a distance of 39 feet even. Pullen also placed seventh in the discus throw (97’3”) while Colten Sims was third with a heave of 108’10”.

On the girls’ side, Greenwood got fourth place points in the 100-meter dash from Kassy Ballard with a time of 13.97 seconds. She also placed second in the 200-meter event (29.06).

In the distance events, Greenwood’s Laurel Yeager was second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:38.51. Kayla Reed finished sixth in the 1600-meter run (6:21.96) while Elka Platt was seventh (6:24.16). The same two girls finished fourth (13:02.11) and sixth (13:46.96), respectively, in the 3200-meter run.

Callie Harmon ran second in the 100-meter high hurdles with a time of 16.04 seconds. Harmon also placed third in the 300-meter high hurdles with a time of 50.67 seconds.

The GHS girls 4×100-meter relay team placed second with a time of 54.03 seconds, while the 4×400-meter relay team finished third (4:40.78). Laurel Yeager shared fifth place in the long jump with a distance of 15’2”. She also placed third (30’4”) in the triple jump for Greenwood.

The GHS boys scored a total of 36 points, while the Lady Bulldogs tallied 45 points, for a combined total of 81, two points behind fourth place Northside.
