Doc Sadler Named Head Basketball Coach at Southern Miss

The announcement was made May 1st by Southern Miss President Dr. Rodney Bennett and Athletics Director Bill McGillis that Greenwood native “Doc” Sadler will be the University of Southern Mississippi’s 20th Golden Eagles Men’s Basketball Coach.

Sadler is the former Head Coach at the University of Nebraska and currently the Assistant Coach at Iowa State where he helped lead the Iowa State Cyclones to one of their best seasons ever with a 28-8 record, an appearance at the Sweet 16, a Big 12 Conference Tournament Title and a #3 seed in the NCAA Tournament. He has coached in the Big 12, the Big 10, the PAC 12 and the Conference USA. He as coached under some of the leading coaches in men’s basketball and has mentored 19 current and former NBA players. He is universally respected by his peers as a great coach and great recruiter. Many of his former players follow him and keep in regular contact.

Sadler’s career includes his first coaching job at County Line High School. Sadler coached at Westark Community College (Now University of Arkansas-Fort Smith). As part of his Division I college coaching career on his way to Hattiesburg, Sadler has held other positions including Arkansas (1982-85), Lamar (1985-86), Houston (1986), Chicago State (1987-88), Texas Tech (1991-94), Arizona State (1994-97), UTEP (2003-04), Kansas (2012)  and Iowa State (2012-14).

Iowa State Men’s Basketball Coach Fred Holberg says of Sadler, “I couldn’t be happier for Doc. Southern Mississippi is getting an excellent basketball coach and an even better person who will do special things for the program.”

Doc Sadler is a 1978 graduate of Greenwood School. A 1982 graduate of the University of Arkansas, Sadler was a student manager for Coach Eddie Sutton. Doc earned his Master’s Degree in Education from Northeastern State in 1991. Sadler is married to his childhood friend and classmate-the former Tonya Denson-and they have two sons, Landon and Matthew. Doc’s mother “Cooky” Sadler lives in Greenwood.
