Delta Dental of Arkansas Foundation Awards “Open Heart Award” to Dr. James Burgess

The Delta Dental of Arkansas Foundation awarded its “Open Heart Award” to Dr. James A. Burgess of Greenwood at the Arkansas State Dental Association Annual Meeting held April 11at the Statehouse Convention Center in Little Rock.

The Delta Dental of Arkansas “Open Heart Award” recognizes Arkansas dentists who have selflessly opened their hearts and donated their professional skills in the field of dentistry to improve the oral health of underserved populations in Arkansas, the United States and abroad.  An individual can nominate any Arkansas dentist for the award, and the award is determined by the Delta Dental of Arkansas Foundation Board.

“After receiving several nominations, the Delta Dental of Arkansas Foundation is pleased to present its ‘Open Heart Award’ to Dr. James Burgess,” said Kelly Caldwell, manager of communications and the Delta Dental of Arkansas Foundation.  “He has dedicated the past 50 years to serving those in need, and his commitment to improving the oral health of Arkansans is an inspiration to all who practice in the dental profession.”

As part of the Open Heart Award, the Delta Dental of Arkansas Foundation donated $5,000 to Dr. Burgess’ charity of choice.  Dr. Burgess chose the Community Dental Clinic of Fort Smith to receive the donation.

Dr. Burgess opened his dental practice in Greenwood in 1959 after graduating from the University of Arkansas and the University of Kansas City Dental School (now UMKC).  Since 1959, he has served people in Sebastian, Crawford, Scott and Logan counties, offering his services to those in need of dental care regardless of their ability to pay.

Although semi-retired, Dr. Burgess continues to volunteer at the Community Dental Clinic in Fort Smith, where he provides basic dental care to thousands of people and helped start the denture program.  He has been an integral part of the Community Dental Clinic since 1989.  Dr. Burgess was instrumental in getting Delta Dental into Arkansas. He serves as an adjunct professor at the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith Dental Hygiene School.

Dr. Burgess belongs to several professional organizations and has served on the boards of several institutions.  He is a member of the American Dental Association, Arkansas State Dental Association and Fort Smith Dental Association, and he served on the Arkansas State Board of Dental Examiners.  He has served as a board member for the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith, the Sparks Regional Medical Center and the Sparks Regional Medical Center Foundation.
