Deal Reached for New Police Station

At a recent Special Meeting of the Greenwood City Council, approval was given for the City to enter into the deal cut between Chief of Police Will Dawson and property Foy H. Brown for the purchase of the old post office facility on Old Hackett Road. The $318,250.00 price has now been agreed upon.

Greenwood voters show support for their Police Department in December, passing a ¼ cent sales tax to fund the purchase and renovation of the facility that has been vacant for some time. Chief Dawson put things into motion back in the summer to draft an Ordinance allowing for the purchase, renovation and equipping the facility.

Greenwood architect Michael Lejong of MAHG Architects has drafted proposed plans for the building. Dawson won considerable good will among townspeople when he modified his previous plans to construct a Police Station out on Highway 71 near Wal-Mart. That approach to the overcrowding and safety issues proved too costly. Chief Dawson looked about the City for an existing structure to be renovated. The property owned by Brown is centrally located and would provide a highly visible and convenient headquarters for the Department. Dawson’s sentiments about the old post office facility were, “It’s centrally located for our department and the people we serve. It will be highly visible as a deterrent to crime. It provides the needed space and parking and using this facility will eliminate at least one abandoned eyesore out of Greenwood.” To that show of concern for the community, the voters responded with their consent to be taxed, the property owner, Mr. Brown was willing to be reasonable and the City Council approved the deal.

Greenwood has operated with a Police Station that is of inadequate size, located inside City Hall, off the lobby. The present site raises safety concerns for the public visiting and working inside City Hall. In addition to that, the lack of a highly visible Police Station makes a statement to the public and any criminal element assessing our preparedness and our commitment to crime fighting. This new facility will send a loud statement in all those directions according to Police personnel and the City Council.
