Bulldogs to open pre-season drills August 7th

By Richard White

Momentum is building for the start of pre-season drills for the 2014 Greenwood Bulldogs and other area teams, several of which could compete for state titles in their respective classifications. Among them are the Bulldogs, entering their 11th year under highly successful Head Coach Rick Jones, and their third season in Class 6A. The Bulldogs open practice on Thursday, August 7th.

The ‘Dogs fell to Pine Bluff in the state semi-finals last fall, ending their impressive 50-game winning streak and their string of three consecutive state titles. Perhaps even more impressive is that under Coach Jones the Bulldogs have won six state championships and played for another one.

Entering the 2014 campaign, Greenwood has been picked as the top-ranked team in Class 6A by Hooten’s Arkansas Football, the most respected high school football publication in the state. The Bulldogs appear strong on the offensive side of the ball, but have some issues to deal with on defense, especially in replenishing a secondary that was hit hard by graduation.

A look at the GHS football calendar reveals that the Bulldogs are concluding their annual FASDOGS workouts this week (July 31st), giving them six days off before the start of pre-season drills. The team will gather at 6 a.m. on August 7th and practice until 10 that morning, followed by a team meeting until noon. They will also workout the following day from 6-10 a.m. and all of the following week, August 11-15, at the same time.

Next Saturday and Sunday, August 9-10, the seniors will have their annual father-son float trip at War Eagle Resort near Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Then on Saturday, August 16th, the team will host its yearly media day for team and individual player photos beginning at 7:30 a.m. for the varsity team. Junior high team and player photos will follow. There will also be an open house practice that same evening from 7-9 p.m. at Smith-Robinson Stadium, followed by a player lock-in from 9-11 p.m.

The annual Bulldog Kickoff will be held Monday evening, August 18th, the first day of school, formerly introducing the coaches, players, and all other members of the support staff and spirit groups. And once classes begin, football practice will shift to the afternoons.

Greenwood will also travel to Fayetteville on Monday, August 25th for a pre-season scrimmage against the Class 7A Purple Dogs. The two junior varsity squads will scrimmage starting at 5:30, followed by the varsity teams at 7 p.m. Upon returning home, the Bulldogs will practice straight through without a day off until their season opener on September 5th at Springdale, including a Sunday afternoon practice on August 31st and a morning practice on Labor Day from 8 a.m. until noon.
