The Arkansas School Nutrition Association has a 25 member chapter in Greenwood that provides the nutritious meals at our local schools. The president of the local chapter is Kristie Green. Each year the group awards a $500.00 scholarship to deserving Greenwood graduates.

This year, something special happened. At the state Food Service Convention in Hot Springs, the Greenwood chapter participated in the “Show Your Spirit” Practice Board Contest. They created First Place Wining life-size doll using a mannequin and named her “The Lunch Lady.”

The prize money for the first place award was $300.00 and that with the other funds raised by the  chapter through garages sales and such allowed for two $500.00 scholarships this year.

The scholarships have been awarded to Shara Thames who will attend UA Fayetteville to study business and Tamra Wakerly who will attend UAFS.  Shara Thames is the daughter of Eneldia Berlanga Thames of Greenwood and the granddaughter of Jim Thames. Tamra Wakerly is the daughter of Jennifer and Dustin Wakerly and is the granddaughter of Larry Burris.

“The Lunch Lady” makes appearances at the campus and likes to play tricks on visitors including a scare for the Hiland Dairy milkman during an early morning delivery when “The Lunch Lady” was hiding in one of the coolers!
